A handoff is controller-talk for when an aircraft passes from the control of one controller to the next. In radar rooms, controllers sit facing their radar screens. In most facilities the screen they are watching is actually a computer screen that displays a portion of the country. It may be that controllers sitting side by side are controlling adjacent airspace sectors, or it may be that the next sector is controlled by a person who is sitting at a screen hundreds of miles from each other. When an aircraft moves from one screen to another they can only do so if the new controller accepts a “handoff” from the previous controller.
